For this reason, we like to meet them and discover their stories and tips. This month, we have the opportunity to present Lorne Beaudet, a professional copywriter with many years of experience.

1-Tell us about yourself

I am a professional with a career made up of diverse experiences: communication, writing, management, event management, funding research, artistic direction, and customer service.

After being in charge of a performance space (planning, communication, marketing), in 1998, I founded a business specializing in event management and communication called Évencom. Since 2006, I have focused more on communication with a specialty in copywriting.

2-Where does your interest in writing come from?

I studied literature. My career brought me to work in communications. When I was producing documents for Évencom, I always had positive reviews from my clients, which encouraged me to offer my services as a writer when it was time to put aside event management. I love to organize events, but I needed to deal with stress and a lot of work. Since I wanted to improve my quality of life, writing was the solution I sought.

3-How did you become self-employed?

Surprisingly, it was not me who had the idea. Instead, my entourage told me that I should become self-employed. This idea grew after hearing this many times, and I finally decided to leave the performance space and leap.

4-What is the most challenging part of self-employment?

Work inconsistency. There can be off-peak periods followed by more intense weeks; however, I accept that it is part of the game. During an off-peak period, I use this time to add content to my blog, update my website, and complete some personal projects.

5-Which part of being self-employed do you like the most?

The freedom. Although I have a non-typical schedule, I feel free. I do not believe I would feel the same if I were an employee if I rely on my past experiences regarding this.

6-Tell us about your work routine.

I start my day between 8:30 and 9 a.m. At 11:30, I take a 30-minute walk, eat lunch, and nap. I go back to work at 1:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.

7-What are the online tools you could not live without?

I frequently use Office 365, Zoom, and CyberImpact to send newsletters, Antidote for proofreading, WebSelf for my websites, and Momenteo for my accounting. I try to opt for local businesses.

8-How did you learn about Momenteo, and how long have you used it?

If I remember correctly, I was WebSelf that mentioned it.

9-What makes Momenteo different from other accounting tools?

I do not really know the other accounting tools. I trust Momenteo, a solution made in Quebec. I never felt like I had to try another one, and I am very satisfied.

10-How did you find your first customers?

I have two main clients. When I left the performance hall, I had the opportunity to stay in the same field. I applied to organize all the parts (financing, production management, communications) of a cultural excellence gala and got the contract; I was the event producer for over 20 years. This same client trusted me to organize other events and manage the communications of different departments. Today, I am still their primary writer for their training service.

My second main client is a communication agency. I must say that I worked hard to get them. It took me a few years and many meetings with their founding president before he agreed to give me writing and communication strategy tasks. I am also their dedicated writer; even if I am self-employed, they present me as a member of their team in the same way as their employees.

11-What are your tips for someone who would like to get into freelance?

Develop partnerships like I did with the clients I just mentioned. For example, the communication agency gives me projects; on my side, if I get a contract about creating a communication plan, I return the favor regarding any requests about graphic design, website building, etc.). It is the perfect example of what I consider to be a partnership.

12-What are your tips for someone who would work with a professional writer?

Check their portfolio and blogs. It is the best way to evaluate if it will be a fit.

13-Why are you proud of being a freelancer?

Recognition. I always have had good comments from my clients.

14-Do you have any big plans for 2024?

I am no longer looking for big projects and performing at all costs. At 73 years old, I prefer a quality of life that avoids massive work.

15-How can we contact you?

By phone:

Office: 418 841•9820

Mobile: 418 570•4536

Toll-free: 1 844 442•1072

By email : lorne.beaudet@me.com
